Introduction

CIRIL is for “Centre for Interdisciplinary Research with Heavy Ions”. Since the start of the  GANIL ion accelerator facility, CIRIL platform and CIMAP laboratory lead the interdisciplinary researches (material science, atomic physics, astrophysiscs/astrochemistry, radiolysis, radiobiology,…) at the facility. CIRIL platform welcomes the external users, develops equipments adapted to the proposed experiments (beam lines, irradiation chambers, on-line measurements…), managed the calls for proposals for interdisciplinary physics beamtimes, schedules the beamtime on its four beamlines (ARIBE, IRRSUD, ME and HE at GANIL). The beamlines open through EMIR&A network are IRRSUD and M.

At IRRSUD beamline, the available ions from Carbon to Uranium are accelerated by one of the injector cyclotrons (C01 or C02) at energy from 0.25 to 1 MeV/A with a continuous measurement of the ion flux during irradiation.

Many in-situ characterization devices could be mounted on IRRSUD area as for example an in-situ X-Ray diffractometer or a high temperature furnace ; and many conditions could be used as detailed below.

The cave D1, managed by CIRIL, receives ion beams accelerated by CSS1 cyclotron for the medium-energy beams and by CSS2 cyclotron for the high-energy-ion beams.

The principle of the medium energy beam is the following : after the CSS1 cyclotron, the charge state of the ion is increased by a thin Carbone stripper foil. This stripping induces a charge state distribution. One of these charge states is injected in the next cyclotron while a lower charge state can be injected in the cave D1.
Thus the interdisciplinary research benefits from typically 3000 hours of “unused” ions, with some constraints due to the fact that the ion-type and the time structure of the beam is imposed by the high-energy experiments.

Access to the site of GANIL is on notice of an appointment. If, as a
professional, you want to visit someone at GANIL you must tell your
partner in advance (at least 2 days before) so that it establishes for
you a notice of appointment.

Without notice of appointment, access will be denied.
On arrival at the site you need to stop the car for that purpose and to
send you to the guard to take a visitor’s badge against surrender of an
identity.
